The following are the information for the tutorial
Title:
Compilation and Software Development Challenges in the Multicore Era
Abstract:
This tutorial will start with a look at current advanced technologies in compilation and software development tools and then explore the challenges that the upcoming multicore revolution brings to these areas. The focus will be on parallel development, optimization, performance and scalability, and tools for debugging and analysis of complex applications. Topics include: automatic and OpenMP based parallelization; cache, memory layout, and other modern optimizations; data race detection and debugging of multi-threaded programs; various performance analysis tools; binary instrumentation and optimization; and collaborating with the open source community. The format will be interactive as a key goal is exchange of ideas. We will use the Sun Studio 12 offering (free C/C++/Fortran compilers and tools for SPARC and x64) to illustrate the concepts.
Speaker:
Partha tirumalai and Yonghong Song
The following are short bio for two speakers
Partha Tirumalai:
Partha Tirumalai is a Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems. He has been with Sun since 1993, working on the architecture, compiler, and performance of Sun's processors and systems beginning with the first 64-bit SPARC implementation, the UltraSPARC I. Prior to joining Sun, he was a research scientist at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories working on advanced processor architectures and compilers for exploiting fine-grained parallelism. Before that he worked on very high frequency mixed-signal bipolar circuits using emitter follower logic at HP's Santa Clara Technology Center. Partha has published more than 25 papers in referred conferences and journals, holds numerous patents, and has worked in the high-tech industry since the early 80's. He is also the recipient of various awards such as the Kolluri Medal, the Siemens India Prize, the Walter P. Murphy Fellowship, the Hewlett-Packard Resident Fellowship, and the Sun Engineering Excellence Award. Partha holds a B.S. degree in EE from IIT Madras, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from Northwestern University.
Yonghong Song:
Yonghong Song received the BE degree from Renmin University of China in 1995. He received the MS degree from University of Minnesota in 1997 and the Ph.D. degree from Purdue Univesity in 2000, respectively.
Since January 2001, he has been working at Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Currently, he is a Senior Staff Engineer in Software Group.
He has published more than 15 referred papers in various journals and conferences.
His research interest includes automatic parallelization, memory and cache locality enhancement, data prefetching, operating system and computer architecture.
